BHEL bags mega Rs 2800 crore contract from MAHAGENCO

New Delhi: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), the country's largest power equipment manufacturer, today announced it has bagged a major Rs 2,800 crore contract for setting up a 660 Megawatt (Mw) supercritical thermal power plant in Maharashtra.

The project will be set up as an expansion of the 1,420 Mw Bhusawal Thermal Power Station operated by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO) in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. 

"BHEL's scope of work for this brownfield expansion project includes design, engineering, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of 1x660 MW supercritical thermal set and civil works," the company said in a statement.

The Bhusawal coal-based power plant is currently equipped with 2 sets each of 210 Mw and 500 Mw ratings, all of them supplied and commissioned by BHEL. The expansion project will entail commissioning of the first supercritical unit for the plant.

The main equipment for the contract will be manufactured at BHEL's Trichy, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Thirumayam and Bengaluru plants while the company's Power Sector-Western Region division will be responsible for civil works and erection and commissioning of the equipment.

BHEL accounts for a significant 81 per cent share in the coal-based power stations installed in Maharashtra by MAHAGENCOy. BHEL has so far secured orders for 50 supercritical Steam Generators (SG) and 43 supercritical Steam Turbine Generators (STG). Of these, 15 SGs and 13 STGs have already achieved capacity addition.

The firm said it has established the capability to deliver power plant equipment of 20,000 Mw per annum to fully meet India's demand for power equipment with technology suited to Indian conditions.
