Maharastra moves one step ahead in gree buildings, signs MoU with IFC

New Delhi: The government of Maharashtra is taking pro-active measures in promoting green housing. The state government’s Housing Department has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with World Bank arm International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The MoU is part of IFC’s ongoing Eco-Cities Program and will support state government in structuring green building policies which shall include providing technical assistance on specific policies/ incentives along with their implementation.

The agreement aims to support capacity building on green housing and provide necessary direction for development of the affordable housing pipeline, including required design support, green certification, identification of sustainable and scalable building materials and/or technologies, development of pilot projects, etc.

An enabling environment is expected to significantly impact the trajectory of the housing sector in India resulting in significant savings in energy, water and waste diversion.

As per IFC’s estimates, by targeting 20 per cent reduction in embodied energy, operational energy and water consumption for 20 per cent of the upcoming housing, 14.5 billion MJ reduction in embodied energy annually, 120 GWh reduction in operational energy per year and approximately 50 million litre reduction in water consumption per day can be targeted.

The Government of Maharashtra has committed to build 1.94 million affordable housing units under the gamut of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban (PMAY-U) mission which envisages to build 10 million housing units by 2022, to address the housing demand in India.

The upcoming housing units in Maharashtra will increase residential building sector floor space by approximately 100 million square metre and will generate higher carbon footprint, posing adverse environmental impacts if not constructed sustainably and factoring occupants comfort. Under the usual scenario, the estimated embodied energy, operational energy and water requirement of the upcoming stock by 2022 will be approximately 360 billion MJ/ year, 3.05 TWh/ year & 1180 MLD (million litres per day) respectively.

With this initiative, IFC aims to support the Maharashtra Housing department to scale-up green affordable housing in the region and avoid lock-in of the resources and energy intensive housing units.
